Commissions
As a working photographer I often find myself in places I’d never normally think of going to, or even consider of personal interest. An obligation to make genuinely interesting pictures inn such places has helped my photography greatly. Additionally, I have learned to love and appreciate subject matter which might otherwise have escaped me, or which I would neglect.
In recent years I have had the privilege of book commissions about the landscape designers Capability Brown and Humphry Repton. These projects brought access to some amazing estates, the private ones of which are in general little seen by the public.
The National Trust commissioned two exhibitions, one of the Brimham Rocks estate, and the other, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal. Both proved challenging but hugely rewarding creatively.
Another (unlikely) commission was to photograph the Wash, a request from my friend Chris Weston, for a film on that subject. Such a flat landscape might well be considered the ultimate challenge for the landscape photographer!
